Turtle Tanks, "Cope Cages" & Modified Vehicles in Ukraine - Purpose, Evolution & Effectiveness
When you fight a war against a backdrop of shortages, emerging threats and Slavic ingenuity, perhaps it's not surprising that you end up with a bunch of systems being used that aren't exactly factory standard.
One of the first images of the Russian invasion were tanks equipped with add-on overhead cages, but in 2024 the most extreme examples of anti-drone protection now include vehicles with entire structures built over them to provide near all round protection.
In this episode, I look at vehicle modification in Ukraine, examine some of the main classes of modification and ad-hoc vehicles we've seen and ask why they exist, and what sort of military value they might have.

The Race to Claim the Arctic - Claims, Icebreakers & Competition in the Far North
Просмотров 260 тыс.День назад
The Arctic is pretty unique. It's a place where allies like the US and Canada feud, Russia is still arguably the dominant power and the United States can casually announce a claim to an area more than twice the size of California. But with access to Arctic resources as a draw - this unique setting is likely to see far more competition in the coming years. So let's chill a bit, and talk Arctic c...
New American Military Aid for Ukraine - What's in the package and what impact will it have?
Просмотров 402 тыс.14 дней назад
In early 2022, the US quickly emerged as one of Ukraine's most important military suppliers, supporting Kyiv with everything from artillery to armour & millions of rounds of artillery ammunition. In late 2023, that vital flow of supplies began to stall as debate in Congress continued. And as supplies ran short, Russian forces took advantage and ground the front forward in several places. Now, t...

Rebuilding US Arms Production - Can a new Strategy Restore the Arsenal of Democracy?

During many major conflicts of the 20th century, the ability of the USA to pump out enormous amounts of defence materiel was a critical factor. In the lead up to WW2 the US would declare itself the 'arsenal of democracy' But with the end of the Cold War came reductions and consolidation - and after the events of early 2022 the US, like many other nations, found itself eager to re-expand its def...

Another possible reason why cages are more common amongst destroyed than captured tanks, is that those crews might have more of a "stand and fight" attitude. Especially if they give a false sense of security, they may be more willing to fight from a losing position than to abandon their vehicle and run

Its data. Think about it. Let’s say your goal was to drive a truck from point a to point b but along the way people will attack you. But the good thing is you can trial and error your way to the finish line. If you send 5 out with wrapped in cages. 5 with nothing and 5 with some reflective pain. And only the 5 with the reflective paint make it you might start mass producing that paint. But if the only ones that make it are the ones with the cages you might want to mass produce cages. What you’re looking at may be the answer they were looking for. That configuration 1 is or isn’t better than configuration 2

that is a running theme of the Russian Military. they literally store everything, its actually was pretty common for the soviets and Russians to build something new off the factory and immediately put it into storage for decades. take the T-54/55 that have been showing up in Ukraine for example where some of those T-54 are from the late 40s and early 50s. this would be the equivalent if the US kept all its M46-47-48 Patton tanks and all of its M60s in the off chance we would want to use them then deployed them to a war going on today. *edit* imagine a scenario where the US sent a few hundred Patton tanks as aid to Ukraine and that is how ridiculous it would seem.
